The study of Daniel chapter eleven has created widespread attraction to Bible students in recent times, and has caused many to make assumptions which history would later prove to be baseless and false. The object of this study is to bring to full focus the agent known as “the king of the North” in Daniel’s prophecy, with the central object in view of bring “meat in due season” to those who are standing in the light, observing the signs of these times. Beginning with the ancient Medo-Persian Empire (Dan. 11:2, 3), the chain of events of Daniel’s prophecy (Chapter 11) reaches on to “the time of the end” (Dan. 11:40), when the “king of the north” plants “the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain” (Dan. 11:45), and culminates, as the angel explained, with the events of Daniel 12:1-4—Michael standing up, and the deliverance of the Saints.
Covering such a long period of time, over twenty-five centuries, the dominion of the kings whose history is chronicled in this prophecy, obviously has passed under a number of different regimes. This article proposes to trace the pages of history aided by the spiritual lens of bible prophecy to identify the true “king of the north,” in all his plays and counter plays, through his inglorious defeats and astounding conquests. I unequivocally state that the “king of the north,” in the latter days, just prior to the deliverance of the saints is the Allied power of the United States and Great Britain—the modern military arm of the Roman Catholic Church.
While not focused on the career of the king of the south, it is worth mentioning that the king of the south had territorial possession of Egypt until the events of verses 40-42, which show a change of hand with Egypt. Since Egypt was a province of the king of the south, during the reign of the Ptolomeys, and since the king of the south is to lose Egypt to the king of the north in “the time of the end,” reason constrains us to see who lost control of Egypt in modern times, and to whom it was given. “At the time of the First World War the English tried to persuade the Ottomans to stay neutral but the local military chiefs where convinced the Germans could not loose and joined the German side. The Germans lost, Turkey lost, and all their remaining territories were split between the English (Palestine, Iraq, Egypt, Kuwait, Bahrain, Emirates) and the French (Lebanon, Syria, Iran). The final end of the Ottoman Empire.” http://historyofengland.china2uk.com/ottoman/ottoman9.html It is now clear that the Ottoman Turks are, in the last days, dubbed by prophecy, “king of the South,” while the English are known as the “king of the North.”
The Identifying Acts of the King of the North.
1. He defeats the king of the south, and takes his kingdom (Dan. 11:15, 16), after which he stands in the “glorious land” (Dan. 11:16) — Palestine.
2. In the glory of the kingdom, a raiser of taxes stands up (Dan. 11:20)—Caesar Augustus.
3. His kingdom is “overflown” with arms of a flood from before him (Dan. 11:22), and he loses Egypt and Palestine.
4. Afterwards he works deceitfully, and becomes strong with a small people (Dan. 11:23)—apostate Christians.
5. He flatters wicked ones for their wickedness (Dan. 11:32)—apostate Christians.
6. He divides the land for gain (Dan. 11:39)—the feudal system.
7. He becomes strong the second time, yet is defeated by the king of the south (Dan. 11:25, 29, 30).
8. Both kings speak lies at one table (Dan. 11:27)—Christianity and Mohammedanism.
9. Having become strong the second time, and having engaged in an unsuccessful war with the king of the south, he sets his heart against the holy covenant (Dan. 11:28)—the Ten Commandments and the statutes.
10. He pollutes the sanctuary of strength, and takes away the daily (Dan. 11:31)—abolition of Sabbath worship, and forces compliance of Sunday sacredness.
11. He forsakes the god of his fathers (Dan. 11:37)—forsakes the pagan system of worship
12. He acknowledges a strange god (Dan. 11:39)—adopts Christianity as the new “State religion.”
13. He disregards the desire of women (Dan. 11:37)—forbids women to marry (desire a husband)—the system of Nunnery.
14. In the time of the end, he again defeats the king of the south, enters into the countries, overflows and passes over (Dan. 11:40); then once more stands in the glorious land. Following this, Edom and Moab and the chief children of Ammon, escape out of his hand (Dan. 11:41); and the Libyans, also the Ethiopians, follow at his steps (Dan. 11:43).
15. Tidings out of the east and out of the north trouble him. Therefore, he goes forth with great fury, destroys, and utterly makes away many (Dan. 11:44).
16. He also plants the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain, yet comes to his end, and no one helps him.
Beginning with the ancient Medo-Persian Empire (Dan. 11:2, 3), the chain of events of this prophecy reaches on to the time that the “king of the north” plants “the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain” (Dan. 11:45), and culminates, as the angel explained, with the events of Daniel 12: “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great Prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” Dan. 12:1.
Covering such a long period of time, many centuries, the dominion of the kings whose history is chronicled in this prophecy, obviously has passed under a number of regimes. Seeing that no human being has lived on and on throughout these centuries, it is obvious that the titles, “king of the south” and “king of the north,” are applicable to two lines of political rulers. Seeing also that no government or kingdom has stood intact throughout the ages, it likewise is obvious that these two lines have undergone many super-sessions of sovereigns — many regimes. For this reason, the Bible differentiates them by their lineal-geographic titles rather than nationalistic identities.
To identify the “king of the South” one simply needs to look at the imperial power which had political possession of Palestine—“the Pleasant Land”, and which began declining “at” the time of the end, then finally capitulated, in the last days, through the assault of the power identified as “the king of the North.” Only one nation in the world answers to this specification, and it is the kingdom of Turkey, formerly known as the Byzantine Empire, which was later called The Ottoman Empire-the political overlord of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the greater parts of Asia.
To clearly identify the king of the north, it is important to find the interpretative “key” of understanding, and this “key” is placed in Dan. 11:20, which states, “Then shall stand up in his [king of the North’s] estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.” Since Caesar Augustus, a Roman, has been credited by sacred and secular history as the world’s renown raiser of taxes, it clears the understanding that verse 20 brings us to the inflection point of the Old Testament period vs. the New Testament period, moving from the period of the Jewish church to that of the Jewish-Christian church.
“And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.” Luke 2:1-6.
From the dictionary we read: “Augustus—The cognomen of the first Roman emperor, C. Julius Caesar Octavianus, during whose reign Christ was born Lu 2:1 His decree that “all the world should be taxed” was the divinely ordered occasion of Jesus’ being born, according to prophecy Micah 5:2 in Bethlehem. This name being simply a title meaning “majesty” or “venerable,” first given to him by the senate (B.C. 27) was borne by succeeding emperors. Before his death (A.D. 14) he associated Tiberius with him in the empire Lu 3:1 by whom he was succeeded.”—Easton’s Revised Bible Dictionary, p. 364.
Since this “raiser of taxes”— Octavianus Augustus by name, made his global decree at the time of Jesus’ birth, we are again constrained by scripture to mark the dividing line of this prophecy from Old to New Testaments in Dan. 11:20 with the Roman taxation introduced by Caesar Augustus. This being true, we see that the events recorded in verses one thru nineteen occur in the Old Testament period, while those of verses 20 thru 45 take place during the New Testament period. It further stands to reason that the later (higher numbered) verses in the chapter speak of events from the birth of Christ, and taking us through church history closer and closer to the “time of trouble”— “the time of the end.” (Dan. 12:1, 4).
The King of the South
While much will not be said in this presentation on the king of the South, for completeness of thought, it is necessary that we at least direct the readers to identifying marks of the king of the North, for both are to be in conflict “at the time of the end” (Dan. 11:40).
“And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.” Dan. 11:3-4. This “mighty king” was Alexander The Great, whose military conquests, during his short-lived life, more that quadrupled the Grecian empire. It was not the divine intention that Alexander should remain in command of the Grecian military for any length of time, thus his untimely death led to the division of his empire according to the might of his four generals: Lysimachus, Ptolemy, Seleucus, and Cassander. At Alexander’s death, he did not have a son old enough to sit upon his throne as king (his son being then only about 2 years old). Then was the scripture fulfilled, “Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven,” Dan 8:8.
At Alexander’s death, his generals assumed control of the Greecian empire, thus history bears record of the first successor to the title “king of the North”— Lysimachus.
Lysimachus (c. 360 BC–281 BC) was a Thessalian Greek officer and “successor” (diadochus) of Alexander the Great, later a king (306 BC) in Thrace and Asia Minor [modern Bulgaria and Turkey, North of Palestine]…During Alexander’s Persian campaigns he was one of his immediate bodyguard and distinguished himself in India. After Alexander’s death (323 BC) he was appointed to the government of Thrace and the Chersonese. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysimachus.
Similarly, in as much as history bears record of the first successor power to the title “king of the North,” it likewise bears record to the first successor power to the title “king of the South”—Ptolemy.
Ptolemy I Soter (367 BC–283 BC) was the ruler of Egypt [Modern Egypt and Ethiopia, South of Palestine] (323 BC – 283 BC) and founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty. In 305 BC he took title of King. The son of Lagus, a Greek nobleman of Eordaea, he was one of Alexander the Great’s most trusted generals, and among the seven “body-guards” attached to his person. He played a principal part in the later campaigns of Alexander in Afghanistan and India. At the Susa marriage festival in 324, Alexander had him marry the Persian princess Artacama, … When Alexander died in 323, Ptolemy is said to have instigated the resettlement of the empire made at Babylon. He was now appointed satrap [governor] of Egypt under the nominal kings Philip Arrhidaeus and the young Alexander IV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptolemy_I_of_Egypt
Now, the reader needs to bear in mind that the Greecian kingdom was to be divided “toward the four winds of heaven.” Dan. 8: 8, as a result of the breaking of “the great horn.” This being true, we must find Alexander’s kingdom divided along the four cardinal points of the compass East, West, North and South. We have already seen the identities of the kings of the North and South, now we will examine the kings of the East and West. Since, however, the prophecy did not foresee the kings of the East and West, is clear that these various kingdoms will be consumed by either the northern kingdom, or the southern kingdom thus leaving two super powers marshalling in the conflict of the latter days—the king of the North, and the king of the South. In this connection then, we now look at the king of the East—Seleucus.
Seleucus I Nicator (Nicator, “the Victor”) (around 358–281 BC) was one of Alexander the Great’s generals who, after Alexander’s death in 323 BC, founded the Seleucid Empire. He established himself and his family in Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau, ruling as far as the Indus region [This empire was located East-North-east of Palestine]. He founded Seleucia on the Tigris River (around 305) as a new royal capital. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seleucid_dynasty
At the second partition, at Triparadisus (321 BC), Seleucus was given the government of the Babylonian satrapy. In 316 BC, when Antigonus had made himself master of the eastern provinces, Seleucus felt himself threatened and fled to Egypt. In the war which followed between Antigonus and the other Macedonian chiefs, Seleucus actively cooperated with Ptolemy and commanded Egyptian squadrons in the Aegean Sea.
The victory won by Ptolemy at the battle of Gaza in 312 BC opened the way for Seleucus to return to the east. His return to Babylon in that year was afterwards officially regarded as the beginning of the Seleucid Empire. Master of Babylonia, Seleucus at once proceeded to wrest the neighbouring provinces of Persia, Susiana and Media from the nominees of Antigonus. A raid into Babylonia conducted in 311 BC by Demetrius, son of Antigonus, did not seriously check Seleucus’s progress. Whilst Antigonus was occupied in the west, Seleucus over the course of nine years (311-302 BC) brought under his authority the whole eastern part of Alexander’s empire as far as the Jaxartes and Indus Rivers. In 305 BC, after the extinction of the old royal line of Macedonia, Seleucus, like the other four principal Macedonian chiefs, assumed the title and style of King. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seleucus_I_Nicator
The final Grecian power yet to be clearly identified is the king of the West—Cassander.
Cassander (c. 350 – 297 BC;), king of Macedonia (302 – 297 BC), eldest son of Antipater, first appears at the court of Alexander III at Babylon, where he defended his father against the accusations of his enemies. [Macedon (or Macedonia from Greek) in Classical Antiquity was a state bordering with the Greek state of Epirus on the west and with Thrace on the East. Alexander the Great launched his conquest of Persia and his subsequent conquests of the majority of the then civilized western world from Macedon.]—(Clearly, Cassander’s kingdom was West-North-west of Palestine, modern-day Greece)
Having been passed over by his father in favour of Polyperchon as his successor in the regency of Macedonia, Cassander allied himself with Ptolemy Soter and Antigonus and declared war against the regent. Most of the Greek states went over to him, including Athens. He further effected an alliance with Eurydice, the ambitious wife of King Philip Arrhidaeus of Macedon.
Both she and her husband, however, together with Cassander’s brother Nicanor, were soon after slain by Olympias. Cassander at once marched against Olympias and, having forced her to surrender in Pydna, put her to death (316 BC). In 310 BC/309 BC he also murdered Roxana and the nominal King Alexander IV of Macedon, respectively the wife and son of Alexander the Great. He also bribed Polyperchon to poison Alexander’s natural son Heracles.
He had already connected himself with the royal family by marriage with Thessalonica, Alexander the Great’s half-sister, and, having formed an alliance with Seleucus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus against Antigonus, he became, on the defeat and death of Antigonus around 301 BC, undisputed sovereign of Macedonia. He died of dropsy in 297 BC.
Cassander was a man of literary taste but violent and ambitious. He restored Thebes after its destruction by Alexander the Great, transformed Therma into Thessalonica, and built the new city of Cassandreia upon the ruins of Potidaea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassander
It is now clear from the Scriptures and sacred history that the Grecian division south of the Mediterranean, the Ptolemaic, first receives the title, “king of the south,” whereas the division north of the Mediterranean, the Lysimachian, first receives the title “king of the north.” In relation to the territories of these two lines of rulers, the Mediterranean, therefore, becomes the point of compass from which they must be reckoned, and Jerusalem, its epicenter.
In 281 B.C., Lysimachus added to his dominion Cassander’s; then in 279 B.C., Seleucus defeated Lysimachus and seized his kingdom, whereupon the eastern, the northern, and the western divisions became one, while Ptolemy held his own, the southern division. The Seleucidan dynasty, therefore, ushered in the second northern regime, whereas the Ptolemaic dynasty continued to be the first southern regime. Thus history bears record that:
“War between Seleucus and Lysimachus broke out, and at the decisive battle of Corupedium in Lydia, Lysimachus fell (281 BC). Seleucus now held the whole of Alexander’s conquests excepting Egypt in his hands, and moved to take possession of Macedonia and Thrace. He intended to leave Asia to Antiochus and content himself for the remainder of his days with the Macedonian kingdom in its old limits. He had, however, hardly crossed into the Chersonese when he was assassinated by Ptolemy Keraunos near Lysimachia (281 BC).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seleucus_I_Nicator
“(3) King Antiochus returning out of Egypt (16) for fear of the Romans, made an expedition against the city Jerusalem; and when he was there, in the hundred and forty-third year of the kingdom of the Seleucidse, he took the city without fighting, those of his own party opening the gates to him. And when he had gotten possession of Jerusalem, he slew many of the opposite party; and when he had plundered it of a great deal of money, he returned to Antioch.
(4.) Now it came to pass, after two years, in the hundred forty and fifth year, on the twenty-fifth day of that month which is by us called Chasleu, and by the Macedonians Apelleus, in the hundred and fifty-third Olympiad, that the king came up to Jerusalem, and, pretending peace, he got possession of the city by treachery; at which time he spared not so much as those that admitted him into it, on account of the riches that lay in the temple; but, led by his covetous inclination, (for he saw there was in it a great deal of gold, and many ornaments that had been dedicated to it of very great value,) and in order to plunder its wealth, he ventured to break the league he had made. So he left the temple bare, and took away the golden candlesticks, and the golden altar [of incense], and table [of shew-bread], and the altar [of burnt-offering]; and did not abstain from even the veils, which were made of fine linen and scarlet. He also emptied it of its secret treasures, and left nothing at all remaining; and by this means cast the Jews into great lamentation, for he forbade them to offer those daily sacrifices which they used to offer to God, according to the law. And when he had pillaged the whole city, some of the inhabitants he slew, and some he carried captive, together with their wives and children, so that the multitude of those captives that were taken alive amounted to about ten thousand.
He also burnt down the finest buildings; and when he had overthrown the city walls, he built a citadel in the lower part of the city, for the place was high, and overlooked the temple; on which account he fortified it with high walls and towers, and put into it a garrison of Macedonians. However, in that citadel dwelt the impious and wicked part of the [Jewish] multitude, from whom it proved that the citizens suffered many and sore calamities. And when the king had built an idol altar upon God’s altar, he slew swine upon it, and so offered a sacrifice neither according to the law, nor the Jewish religious worship in that country. He also compelled them to forsake the worship which they paid their own God, and to adore those whom he took to be gods; and made them build temples, and raise idol altars in every city and village, and offer swine upon them every day. He also commanded them not to circumcise their sons, and threatened to punish any that should be found to have transgressed his injunction.
He also appointed overseers, who should compel them to do what he commanded. And indeed many Jews there were who complied with the king’s commands, either voluntarily, or out of fear of the penalty that was denounced. But the best men, and those of the noblest souls, did not regard him, but did pay a greater respect to the customs of their country than concern as to the punishment which he threatened to the disobedient; on which account they every day underwent great miseries and bitter torments; for they were whipped with rods, and their bodies were torn to pieces, and were crucified, while they were still alive, and breathed. They also strangled those women and their sons whom they had circumcised, as the king had appointed, hanging their sons about their necks as they were upon the crosses. And if there were any sacred book of the law found, it was destroyed, and those with whom they were found miserably perished also.” The Complete Works of Falvius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Wars, Chapter 5 (3-4 ).
“(7) Yet did that Antiochus, who was also called Dionysius, become an origin of troubles again. This man was the brother of Demetrius, and the last of the race of the Seleucidse.” The Complete Works of Falvius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Wars, Chapter 4 (7).
In summarizing the historical record, therefore, the student of prophecy needs to trace on the pages of history, the conquests and defeats of both the Selucidase and Ptolemic kingdoms, for these are the kingdoms of prophecy. Space does not allow us to venture into the ancient history of these kingdoms, however, sufficient information has been presented in this study thus far, to direct the diligent student on a cogent path to understanding the full historical and prophetic character of these powers in conflict. We now channel the remainder of our investigation to the career of the king of the North. Before we move on, it is important that the reader bears in mind the truth that the political powers which bear rule over the Selucidase and Ptolemic kingdoms in the latter days, are the very ones in prophecy identified as the king of the north and the king of the south in the latter days. With this fact in mind, we now continue to explore the identifying characteristics of the king of the North.
The King of the North
To this point, the prophetic vision has been open to all, but from here on, it has remained closed though many have tried to open it. To open, without a key, a locked door, is, of course, to break the door. But, being unbreakable, the locked door of Prophecy is impossible to open without, The Prophetic Key.
The simple and positive way not to lose sight of the identity of these two kings, is to let the pen of Prophecy trace on the map of history, the successive rulers of Egypt and Palestine. For the titles of the kings who conquered and who lost these ancient countries, are chronicled in this prophetic chapter to preserve the identity and to expose the evil intents of both the king of the south and the king of the north.
Remember now, to begin with, the king of the south rules the “glorious land,” Palestine, along with Egypt, and the king of the north takes the glorious land twice (Dan. 11:16, 41). If he takes it twice, then he must have lost it once. Consequently, both kings ruled it twice, and lost it twice. But the king of the north, the last to rule it, rules it “in the time of the end,” the time many run to and fro, and the time knowledge has increased (Dan. 12:4) — our time. Mark this carefully, for these transactions of the land provide the key to the identity of these kings from the time of Alexander’s death to our time.
The angel emphatically declared that the kings to rule Palestine, together with Egypt, were to be as follows: First, the king of the south (Ptolemy); second, the king of the north (Pagan Rome); third, the king of the south (Turkey); and fourth the king of the north (England). Here, in the following pages, are the details of prophecy correlated with history.
In the light of these foregone fundamental facts, we should now be able to rightly evaluate the unfolding of the scroll, and to intelligently match the page of prophecy with the page of history as we pass from the time of the first northern regime, that of the Lysimachian, on beyond the time of the second northern regime, that of the victorious Seleucidae, who subjugated the Lysimachian dynasty, and on to the time of the third northern regime, that of Rome, the power which overthrew the Seleucidan kingdom. And as the prophetic account was given to expose the work of the king of the north during the third regime, we are therefore led to examine the afore numbered group of prophetic acts, as pointed out on pages 1 and 2.
1. He defeats the king of the south, and takes his kingdom (Dan. 11:15, 16), after which he stands in the “glorious land” (Dan. 11:16) — Palestine.
The king of the north, in rising to prominence and power gained a military victory against the king of the south, and secured in his clutches “the glorious (pleasant) land—Palestine, including Jerusalem proper. Regarding this “glorious (pleasant) land” the bible is not silent: “Yea, they [Israel] despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word.” Ps. 106:24. The “pleasant land” here mentioned is Palestine (Canaan). Positioned in Babylon—north-east of Jerusalem, Daniel recorded, “And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.” Dan. 8:9. Then Zechariah backs up Daniel’s record by declaring: “But I scattered them [Israel] with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land [Palestine] was desolate after them that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.” Zech. 7:14. See also Jer 3:19.
The power here which defeated the king of the south was none other than Pagan Rome, thus the title “king of the north” attaches to her
2. In the glory of the kingdom, a raiser of taxes stands up (Dan. 11:20)—Caesar Augustus.
When Rome rose to her “glory” she started exerting her international sway on all provinces within her political realm, thus she required of her kingdoms to pay taxes to the crown. The first wave of this taxation occurred at the time of the birth of Messiah, as previously stated, see Luke chapter 2. The fact also that Inspiraion stated in the “glory” of the kingdom, prefigures that this “glory” shall wane, thus this period continued until 476 AD when indeed, the glory of the Pagan Roman Empire came to an end, and Ecclesial (Christianized) Rome began to rise to prominence, where in 538 AD to took on a decidedly Christian appearance, as the Ostrogoths, Vandals, and Heruli powers of Europe were supplanted by the Papacy. The King of the title “king of the North” was now worn by the Roman Empire—both Pagan and Papal.
“And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.” Dan. 11: 21. This marks the rise of the papal leaders—the system of popery which though not given “the honour of the kingdom” did gain political and spiritual momentum through the arm of the church, and thereby “peaceably” obtained the kingdom by “flatteries”– slipperiness, fine promises, or smoothness. In this manner has the Papacy risen to prominence, in stealth and “fine promises,” stealing the vital source of the word of God from the common people. The system and doctrine of the “Nicolaitans” (Rev. 2: 6, 15)—the bishopric replaced the Apostolic order, and gave one man (bishop) the ascendancy over another (bishop), in a cascading hierarchical order, then finally having a chief bishop who would reign as sovereign over the entire body of believers! From Strong’s we learn that the very name “Nicolaitans = “destruction of people.” This false system of priest craft came in and destroyed the people and their order of true worship. After gaining popular religious sway from the populace, it was not difficult for the Papacy to eventually replace the Imperial Pagan Roman Empire.
3. His kingdom is “overflown” [overran] with arms of a flood from before him (Dan. 11:22), and he loses Egypt and Palestine.
“And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken; yea, also the prince of the covenant.” Dan. 11: 22.
Here is shown the break-up of the Western Roman Empire at the hands of the barbarian hordes which swept down and, as a flood, overflowed it. History bears record of those troublous times in the following excerpts:
“Not only did Britain fall to the Angles, Saxons and Jutes in 407, but the way was cleared for Germanic tribes to break through the poorly defended frontiers and overrun most of the Roman Empire’s western provinces. Overwhelmed, the Roman armies were unable to expel the invaders and the Western Roman Empire, built up over the course of eight centuries, collapsed.”
“In 476, the traditional date for the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the German chieftain Odovacer deposed the West’s last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, and established an autonomous kingdom in Italy. In 493, however, the Ostrogoths, led by Theodoric (c. 454 – 526), a German leader who had been brought up at the Court of Constantinople, defeated Odovacer and in turn established control over Italy.”
“By the end of the fifth century, Roman imperial government had come to an end in the West as that half of the empire was thoroughly overrun by Germanic peoples. Political power shifted from the Romans to the Germans who, after invading the territory, settled and established independent kingdoms throughout western Europe. The Visigoths occupied Spain, the Burgundians held Provence, the Ostrogoths ruled Italy, and the Franks held Gaul, which would become the most lasting state established by any of the Germanic tribes, France.” http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/firsteuro/invas.htm. See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Empire#Age_of_Augustus_.2831_BC_-_AD_14.29.
With the Western Imperial Power of Rome now completely “overran,” to continue her sovereignty, Rome transferred all her civil authority to the Church, who finally held sway of the empire and wore the triple crown from 538 AD to 1798 AD. This marks the second chapter in the life of the Roman Empire—the rise of Papal Rome, or “The Holy Roman Empire.”
In presenting the vision, Inspiration has also told us that not only will the kingdom—Roman Empire be broken, but “also the prince of the covenant.” Dan. 11: 22. This verse stretches therefore, from the crucifixion of Christ—“the prince of the covenant”— through to the fall of Pagan Rome. This prophecy was also mentioned in Daniel 9: 26, which declares: “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood [war], and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.” The cutting off of Messiah here mentioned is equivalent to the breaking “also of the prince of the covenant.”—the crucifixion of Messiah. Christ being the foundation of “the covenant” he rightly bears the title “Prince of the Covenant” and throughout the book of Daniel, he is thus identified. This passage also helps to confirm that the Papacy is an Anti-Christ system from its very inception—it opposes and exalts itself above Christ! Read 2 Thess. 2: 2-7.
4. Afterwards he works deceitfully, and becomes strong with a small people (Dan. 11:23)—apostate Christians.
“And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully: for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.” Dan. 11: 23.
From this prophetic statement, we see that Rome was to rise from its ruin and humiliation, and again “become strong,” but this time by deceit, and with a “small people.” In this chain of prophecy, then, Rome is shown in two different phases, Pagan and Ecclesiastical, just as it is shown by the fourth symbolical beast of Daniel 7. Thus it was that after Pagan Rome saw itself overrun and humbled to the ground, down and out, so to speak, it conceived a deceit by which to bring itself to power again. The scheme resulted in an ecclesiastical code of laws—(the early Inquisition which would much later develop into the slaughter of St. Bartholomew), the enforcement of which it carried out with a “small people” — the so-called Christians.
It did not call for dethroning the kings, but rather for Christianizing them. Thus peaceably the king of the north succeeded in putting over his scheme to reign as spiritual king of kings in the name of the Christian’s God. First it reigned over nations, second over kings of nations.
These historical and Biblical facts show that the Christianized nations, under one spiritual head, constitute Rome’s second phase, and Inspiration gave him the title “king of the north.” At his throne, kings and peasants alike, within the far-flung boundaries of Christianized Rome, bowed down in absolute submission and worship.
5. He flatters wicked ones for their wickedness against the covenant (Dan. 11:32)—apostate Christians.
“He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province; and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers’ fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches: yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time… And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” Dan. 11: 24, 32. So through subtlety—apparently peaceful means, he again became strong, and exploited Christianity, as the following paragraphs of history confirm.
“He [Charlemagne] conquered Saxony in the 8th century, a goal that had been the unattainable dream of Augustus…He proceeded to force Catholicism on the conquered, slaughtering those who refused to convert.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne#Life
“The bishops, or overseers of the Christian churches, at first demeaned themselves in the meek spirit of the founder of their religion. But at length they sought temporal power, and worldly advantage. The bishops of the great cities assumed authority over those of the surrounding country; and Rome Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem became the seats of ecclesiastical power; and their bishops might be said to constitute an oligarchy in the church…. Rome became, through the dark ages, a king of kings; nay more – he assumed to be in the place of God.” — Universal History, pp. 198, 199.
“At the coronation of Charlemagne, Pope Leo III., after placing the crown upon his head, saluted him with the title of emperor of the Romans. He had quelled the barbarous nations of Europe, with the exception of the Danes, or Normans, and his kingdom comprised France, Germany, Italy, and the north of Spain. From the east Irene, the empress of Constantinople, sought his friendship, and even the caliph of Bagdad, the princely Haroun al Raschid, entered into a correspondence with him, and sent him the keys of the holy sepulchre of Jerusalem. Charlemagne, though a barbarian who at first could not write his name, but ‘signed his treaties with the hilt of his sword, and enforced them with its point,’ had yet great sympathy with learned men….” — Universal History, p. 203.
“…WITIKIND, the most valiant and renowned of their chiefs, at length embraced Christianity, and resigned his arms. Charlemagne then obliged the Saxon people, under penalty of death, to receive baptism. He invaded and conquered the Huns and Sclavonians.” — Universal History, p. 202.
“…Charles, unable to repel the invaders, ceded to them the province of Nuestria, thereafter called Normandy, and gave to Rollo, his daughter in marriage. The Norman chief was however, to do homage to Charles, kneeling and kissing the royal toe….” — Id., p. 202.
“Alfred [king of England] granted the Danes permission to settle in Northumberland and East Anglia, on condition of their being governed by his laws, and embracing Christianity. They were accordingly baptized; and the king himself stood godfather for GUTHRUM their chief….” — Universal History, p. 209.
“He found a pretext for invading the kingdom of Lombardy, in the hostilities of DESIDERIUS against the pope. Charlemagne crossed the great St. Bernard from Geneva, and successively took Pavia and Verona. Lombardy was soon reduced to submission, and the king made captive. Charlemagne next visited Rome, where he was received by pope Adrian 1., with every demonstration of joy, and hailed as the deliverer of the church. He caused himself to be crowned king of Lombardy.” — Universal History, p. 201.
“In 800, at Mass on Christmas day in Rome, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne Imperator Romanorum (Emperor of the Romans), a title that had been out of use in the West since the abdication of Romulus Augustulus in 476. … Charlemagne did not use the title until much later, …he never referred to himself as Imperator Romanorum but rather as Imperator Romanum gubernans Imperium (Emperor ruling the Roman Empire).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne#Life
In this subtle manner came the king of the north, and obtained “the kingdom by flatteries” (Dan. 11:21) and by honoring “the god of forces,” as prophesied in Dan. 11:24, 38, 39. Hence the total focus of Rome was the christianizing of everyone, at the expense of their sanctification, and people were “baptized” into church fellowship, not because they a converted to Christ, but to avert the inhumane persecution which they would suffer in exchange.
6. He becomes strong the second time, yet is defeated by the king of the south (Dan. 11:25, 29, 30).
“And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him…At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter…For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.”
We have already seen from prophecy, also from history, that the first regime of the south (the Ptolemaic) was overthrown by the third regime of the north (that of Pagan Rome). And as Pagan Rome never waged war against any other power of the south, two points stand out clearly: First, following the Ptolemaic regime, another king of the south must have risen; and second, the war against this king of the south was waged by the regime subsequent to Pagan Rome, that of Christianized Rome, the fourth regime of the north. It stirred up “his power and his courage against the king of the south.”
The only regime that has risen from the south since the Ptolemaic dynasty went down, and that has ruled Egypt and Palestine, is that of the Moors: “a Mohammedan, Arabic-speaking race of mixed descent, forming part of the population of Barbary, and deriving their name from the Mauri, the ancient inhabitants of Mauretamia, whose pure lineal descendants are, however, the Amazirgh, a branch of the Berbers. The modern Moors have sprung from a union of the ancient inhabitants of this region with their Arab conquerors, who appeared in the 7th century. As the Mohammedan conquerors of the Visigoths in Spain (711-713) came from North Africa, the name Moor was also applied to them by Spanish chroniclers, and in that connection is synonymous with Arab and Saracen. These Moors pushed northward into France, until their repulse by Charles Martel at the great battle of Tours in 732, after which they practically restricted themselves to Spain south of the Ebro and the Sierra Guadarrama…. The expelled Moors, settling in the north of Africa, founded cities from which to harass the Spanish coasts, and finally developed into the piratical states of Barbary, whose depredations were a source of irritation to the civilized Christian powers even till well into the present century.” — Twentieth Century Cyclopaedia, Vol. VI, p. 24.
The conflicts between the south and the north following the Greeko-Roman wars, were between the Mohammedans and the Christians. At that time, therefore, while the title, “king of the north,” applies to the rulers of Christianized Rome, the title, “king of the south,” applies to the Mohammedan rulers.
(Inasmuch as the Saracens, Moors, Arabs, and Turks — the Moslems — are the successors of Mohammed’s empire in different regimes, we herein, for the sake of brevity, use the name “Mohammedans” for all, as if they were one regime.)
These prophetically and historically chronicled events make it impossible to misapply the titles, or to misconstrue the powers.
Moreover, the verses (Dan. 11:25, 26, 28-30) upon which we are now concentrating, credit victory to the king of the south, and history shows that, at the exact time the scripture points out, the Mohammedans arose from Africa, and also invaded the Christian nations north of the Mediterranean. Then it was that Rome lost Egypt and Palestine.
In these verses, the personal pronouns of the two antagonists the “king of the south” and the “king of the north,” are not traceable by grammatical law, but only by the logic of events:
“And he [the king of the north] shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he [the king of the north] shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him. Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat [the meat of the king of the north], shall destroy him [the king of the north], and his [king of the south’s] army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain…. Then [being defeated] shall he [the king of the north] return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he [the king of the north] shall do exploits, and return to his own land. At the time appointed he shall return, and come toward the south; but it shall not be as the former, or as the latter.” Dan. 11:25, 26, 28, 29.
Though the “he” of Dan. 11:28 returns to “his land with great riches,” he did not take them as booty from the king of the south, whose army overflowed him and caused many to “fall down slain,” not to stand (Dan. 11:26), but he must have received them from the converts to his religion. Those who ate the portion of his meat (Dan. 11:26), his servants, and who later destroy him, were, at the outset, the Protestants.
As the “he” of Dan. 11:29 returns at the appointed time and comes toward the south, “he” is therefore the king of the north gone down for another battle. These are the particulars which history confirms, and thus it is seen that the bracketed identification of the pronouns is correct.
The western incursion of the Mohammedans began “in 639 A.D.,” when they “invaded the country, and Egypt became a Mohammedan province.” — The New Student’s Reference Book. Thus, following the Ptolemies, the Mohammedans, whose rule was the second southern regime, came into the title, “king of the south.”
By 814 A.D., Rome (the king of the north) had already ceded Egypt and Palestine to the Mohammedans (to the king of the south).
Conscience-dominating Christianity from the north, and conscience-dominating Mohammedanism from the south, have ever since been in territorial and religious conflict. And whichever one took a slice of the other’s dominion, he forced, upon penalty of death for nonconformity, his religious beliefs upon his captives. Today (2005) we see the same spirit at work, the terror-driven minds of our modern terrorists is in their allegiance to “Allah” for Mohammedanizing the world to follow their religion at the expense of Christianity. In conflict, therefore, are two ideologies the Christian religion and its worldview versus the Moslem religion and its worldview, both being antithetical to the other.
7. Both kings speak lies at one table (Dan. 11:27)—Christianity and Mohammedanism.
“And both these kings’ hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table; but it shall not prosper: for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.” (Dan. 11:27)
The one table at which both kings speak, is, of course, figurative; that is, Ecclesiastical Rome declared to their captives that the Roman religion was foreshadowed by the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary that she was to bear a son the Saviour of the world; likewise Mohammedanism next declared to the same people (at the same table), when they became their captives, that the angel Gabriel appeared to Mohammed and gave him the religion which all the people of the earth must have.
Though Rome’s declaration as to just what Gabriel said to Mary, is founded in fact, Rome’s actual religion, merely coated with Christianity, was not the religion of the One Whose birth Gabriel forespoke. As to Mohammed’s receiving his religion from Gabriel, he never did. Thus, both the Mohammedanized pashas and the Christianized lords, were speaking lies at one table — the people’s. But these “shall not prosper,” declared the angel, “for yet the end shall be at the time appointed”; that is, their false religions will come to an end at an appointed time: they will not endure forever.
[The Muslim creed in English: “I believe in God; and in His Angels; and in His Scriptures; and in His Messengers; and in The Final Day; and in Fate, that Good and Evil are from God, and Resurrection after death be Truth. “I testify that there is nothing worthy of worship but God; and I testify that Muhammad is His Messenger.”] – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam
[The Apostles’ Creed: “I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.] – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostles_Creed
From the abovementioned creeds, it is clear that Roman Catholicism and Mohammedanism “both spake lies” (Dan. 11: 27) to the same (“one”) people. In this regard then, without delving in much theology, one can readily see that in the Moslem religion one’s salvation hinges on the belief that “Muhammad is God’s Messenger”—a doctrine the Bible does not teach, while in the Catholic’s Creed, confession is to be made that Jesus “descended into hell”—[“Hell is a place of torment and pain.”], a doctrine the bible flatly rejects. The biblical definition of “hell” regarding the death of Christ, is “the grave,” and not a place of pain and suffering, as is erroneously believed by a large sector of the Christianized world.
8. Having become strong the second time, and having engaged in an unsuccessful war with the king of the south, he sets his heart against the holy covenant (Dan. 11:28)—the ten commandments and the statutes.
“Then shall he return into his land with great riches; and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits, and return to his own land.” Dan. 11:28.
Seeing the necessity of compromising with the heathen in order to make an easy prey of them, the king of the north therefore set his heart against the “holy covenant” (Dan. 11:28, 30, 32) that is, he dropped from the Christian’s creed the Sabbath of creation (Ex. 20:8-11), which the Lord “blessed and hallowed” as a memorial of His works, “a perpetual covenant.” Ex. 31:16, 17.
The king of the north’s having intelligence only with those who did “forsake the holy covenant,” clears two points: first that all did not forsake the Sabbath; second that the small people with whom he became strong, were not the faithful followers of Christ, but the unfaithful ones.
In the blazing light of history, we are now seeing that Rome’s vexation against “the holy covenant” was not simply against the Sabbath, but against the entire system of statutes and laws given by God to Moses, thus she declares: “The Catholic Church abolished not only the Sabbath, but all the other Jewish festivals.” T. Enright C.S.S.R., Bishop of the St. Alphonsus’ (Rock) Church, St. Louis, Missouri, June 1905.
“The first Christians being mostly Jews, continued to celebrate the Passover in remembrance of the death of Christ, the true Passover; and this was continued among those who from among the Gentiles had turned to Christ. Accordingly, the celebration was always on the Passover day,—the fourteenth of the first month. Rome, however, and from her all the West, adopted the day of the sun as the day of this celebration. According to the Eastern custom, the celebration, being on the fourteenth day of the month, would of course fall on different days of the week as the years revolved. The rule of Rome was that the celebration must always be on a Sunday—the Sunday nearest to the fourteenth day of the first month of the Jewish year. And if the fourteenth day of that month should itself be a Sunday, then the celebration was not to be held on that day, but upon the next Sunday. One reason of this was not only to be as like the heathen as possible, but to be as unlike the Jews as possible; this in order not only to facilitate the ‘conversion’ of the heathen by conforming to their customs, but also by pandering to their spirit of contempt and hatred of the Jews. It was upon this point that the bishop of Rome made his first open attempt at absolutism.” The Great Empires of Bible Prophecy, A.T. Jones, p. 383.
“Christ gave to Moses…precepts which were to govern the every day life. These statutes were explicitly given to guard the ten commandments. They were not shadowy types to pass away with the death of Christ. They were to be binding upon man in every age as long as time should last.” E.G. White Comments, SDA Bible Commentary, Vol.1, p. 1104.
9. “And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.” Dan. 11:32.
This verse reveals the character of each class: first, of the unfaithful; and second, of the faithful. As to the destiny of the faithful, we read: “And they that understand (the born-again Christians) among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days…Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.” Dan. 11:33, 34.
These verses, besides foreshadowing the martyrdom of the faithful followers of Christ, predict the Reformation, the “little help,” and foretell that its present fallen state is caused by “flatteries.” He pollutes the sanctuary of strength, and takes away the daily (Dan. 11:31)—abolition of Sabbath worship, and forces compliance of Sunday sacredness.
“And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.” Dan. 11:31.
That these three links of Truth (the polluting of the sanctuary, the taking away of the daily, and the placing of the abomination) in the prophetic chain of events, bring us several centuries into the Christian era, is conclusively confirmed by Christ’s referring to them as in the future from the time He uttered the command:
“When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains.” Matt. 24:15, 16.
A heathen sanctuary is already unclean, and therefore cannot be polluted. Clearly, then, the sanctuary of strength (not the heathen) was polluted by bringing into it a pagan priesthood and unconverted heathen. The “sanctuary” is the Christian church, for during the period in which the pollution took place there was no sanctuary in Jerusalem. Moreover, since 70 A.D. the system of sacrificing was permanently removed in the destruction of the Temple at Jerusalem, and thus shuts tight the door against the possibility of having the word “sacrifice” included with the text of Dan. 11:31, and exposes the fact of its being supplied by the translators. The “abomination” which brought desolation to the true believers was the pagan festival of Sun-worship which was baptized into Christianity in order to attract the pagans, and neither it nor its pagan patrons have left the church since, and will foment in the titanic struggle during the “mark of the beast” system denounced by the Third Angel’s Message (Rev. 14: 9-12).
10. He forsakes the god of his fathers (Dan. 11:37)—forsakes the pagan system of worship
“Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers … nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.”
No nation but Christianized Rome fulfills this prophecy, for she is the only one that disregarded the god of her fathers (the Pagan god), and acknowledged a strange god (the God of the Christians). And although she professed to have wholeheartedly accepted the Christian’s God, this scripture exposes the falsity of her profession.
The bible further warns us of this system of the Papacy, pawning itself off in the church of God, as though it were the authentic channel of God’s grace, all the while being Satan’s viceroy on earth. Thus, “that man of sin [must] be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” 2 Thess. 2: 3,4. In following this evil course, the Papacy has fulfilled the prophecy to the very letter. There are many today who think that the papacy is the voice of God on earth, and kings and presidents alike, fall down at the pontifical throne, only to be sucked in by the venom of the “wine” (Rev. 14: 8; 18:3) of Babylon’s fornication.
11. He disregards the desire of women (Dan. 11:37)—forbids women to marry (desire a husband)—the system of Nunnery and a false preisthood.
“Neither shall he regard … the desire of women.” Dan. 11:37. Woman’s desire is a home (Gen. 3:16) — a desire which the Lord placed in her heart. She desires to marry to one man and rear a home—a family. “Unto the woman he said…thy desire shall be to thy husband.” The Roman Catholic institution of nunneries, and the celibacy of priests therefore, is not in God’s order, and clearly militates against the desire that God has placed in the heart of women and men alike. From the very founding of the first home, God gave man a helpmeet—a wife, and called it “very good,” hence a system which would disrupt the continuance of the home—marriage—cannot be ordained of God, but by the very one who destroyed the first home established in Eden.
12. He acknowledges a strange god (Dan. 11:39)—adopts Christianity and its God as the new “State religion.”
“Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.” Dan 11:39. This romance with “a strange god” is the attachment which Rome has placed on the Christian’s God. Prior to Constantine’s acknowledging Christianity as the State Religion, Rome acknowledged the gods of the pagans, but in fulfilling the prophecy, she played the harlot to seduce God’s people into idolatry, for indeed that is what she has always been—“the synagogue of Satan.”
“I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews (Christians), and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.” Rev. 2:9. “Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols.” Rev. 2: 20.
13. He divides the land for gain (Dan. 11:39)—the feudal system.
“Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.”
“What is feudalism? Three elements existed and characterize the period: lords, vassals and fiefs. Feudalism is defined by how these three elements fit together. A lord was a noble who owned land. A vassal was given land by the lord. The land was known as a fief. In exchange for the fief, the vassal would provide military service to the lord. The obligations and relations between lord, vassal and fief form the basis of feudalism.”— http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feudal_System#What_is_feudalism.3F
In summary, feudalism is the dividing of the land by the Bishop of Rome to kings and lords, who would perform the king’s military bidding at the behest of Rome—the papacy. Feudalism also saw the handing off of the land to peasant workers, who would labor and turn over the moneys of their harvest to the Bishop of Rome, vicariously through the channels of the lords and kings.
“The FEUDAL SYSTEM is a term used to express the manner in which the chiefs, who conquered by the aid of their armies, and settled in the conquered countries, divided the lands among their followers; and the liabilities and privileges growing out of this division. When the chief, or king, saw the whole undivided territory on the one hand, and the body of his followers wishing to settle it on the other, the question naturally arose, how should he divide it? The unsettled state of the world was to be considered. If he divided it among his people, without preserving a warlike attitude, they would become the prey of some of the armed hordes, still moving in search of settlements.
“The leader, therefore, after retaining what he chose, gave out the lands in large portions to his principal captains, — on condition of their doing homage to him, paying a certain sum of money, and appearing in the field with a certain number of retainers, whenever he called for their aid. These chief officers, after keeping what they desired for their own use, divided the remainder of the land assigned them, to their own favorites; who were to furnish money and soldiers to them, as they were to the king. The conquered inhabitants who remained became slaves, and were transferable with the lands. These kings rose by their own prowess; but on settling with their nation, the monarchy was generally first elective in their families, then hereditary.” — Universal History, p. 200.
14. At the time of the End the King of the South wages War.
The angel that dictated Daniel’s writings, explains that in the time of the end these prophecies were to be revealed, and that at that time “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.” Dan. 12:4.
Modern inventions, especially in the realm of travel and of communication, are recognized as the fulfillment of the predicted increase of knowledge. The present increase of knowledge, therefore, shows that we are now living in the time of the end. At the beginning of it, declared Inspiration, (in the eighteenth century) the king of the south “shall push” at the king of the north — the time in which the king of the north shall — “…come against him [against the king of the south] like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.” Dan. 11:40-43.
Passing beyond the prophetic declaration of the Mohammedan victories, and coming to “the time of the end,” in the eighteenth century, we find that the Christianized king of the north in his fifth regime (the Christian governments independent of the church) is at the outset to overrun the king of the south (the Mohammedan Empire), and is finally to retake from him Egypt and Palestine and many other countries besides those which comprised the Mohammedan Empire.
The decline of the Turkish Empire commenced in 1699 (at the time of the end — Dan. 12:4), with the “TREATY OF KARLOWITZ (See 1699, Jan. 26). The agreement basically confirmed the conditions on the ground at the end of the 1683–99 war: Austria gained all of Hungary (except the Banat of Temesvar), Transylvania, Croatia, and Slovenia; Venice kept the Morea and its conquests in Dalmatia; and Poland obtained Podolia and western Ukraine. In a separate treaty (signed in Istanbul on June 13, 1700), Russia retained Azov and its conquests along the Dniester. The treaty marked the beginning of Ottoman withdrawal from Europe. The empire shifted to the defensive while the initiative passed to the Europeans, primarily the Russians. http://www.bartleby.com/67/805.html , The Encyclopedia of World History, 2001. This treaty also marks the beginning of the end of the king of the south, who demise should give prominence to the career of the king of the north.
“In 1908 the Young Turk movement, a reformist and strongly nationalist group, with many adherents in the army, forced the restoration of the constitution of 1876, and in 1909 the parliament deposed the sultan and put Muhammad V on the throne. In the two successive Balkan Wars (1912–13), Turkey lost nearly its entire territory in Europe to Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and newly independent Albania. The nationalism of the Young Turks, whose leader Enver Pasha gained virtual dictatorial power by a coup in 1913, antagonized the remaining minorities in the empire.”
“Until 1915, when England declared Turkish suzerainty at an end and established a protectorate, Egypt was nominally a Turkish dependency. But since 1883, following Arabi Pasha’s rebellion, Egypt had been practically ruled by Great Britain under a consul-general.” — The New Student’s Reference Book.
“Palestine [the glorious land], for long years the home of the Hebrew race, was under control of Rome in the time of Christ. In the seventh century it passed under the Moslem power, and from 1516 to 1919 was in the hands of the Turks and a part of the Turkish Empire.” — The World Book.
Edom, Moab, and the chief children of Ammon (those of the Trans-Jordan) then came under the mandate of Great Britain. The Word, however, says they “shall escape out of his hand,” showing that though he now has them (as a result of World War-1), he is to lose them. At the present moment (2005), all three countries have earned their independence from British colonialism, and are ruling their own sovereign states, with strong diplomatic relations with the United States of America. These territories though are the centers of political troubles for the USA and her allies, and form the cradle of modern terrorism.
In the world of post 1699 when the Ottoman Empire started her decline up to World War-1, prophecy identifies Great Britain as the bearer or the title “king of the north.” With the Allied victories of World War-II however, that title has been transferred to the United States of America, the very power which prophecy declares shall make an image to the papacy—the beast,—and enforce civil penalties against dissenters of her ecclesiastical dogmas. The beast with “lamblike horns” is to speak as a dragon, and become a persecutor of the true believers (Rev. 12:17; Rev. 13: 13-16). Hence, while the papacy held the title “king of the north” for some time in the Christian era, we see that at the “time of the end” this title is transferred to a political power which will carry out Rome’s wishes more effectively that the papacy ever could, since she now does not have an army, an air force, or an armada.
And “the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps” (Dan. 11: 43) meaning they shall follow him –be for him—become his ally. This seems a strange notion to mention that of all nations “the Libyans” will be an ally of the United States, but the prophecy declares it so. Remarkably, although the downing of Pan Am Airline flight 103 over Lockerbie Scotland caused deep divisions within both governments, compounded by the Air strikes against Libya in the middle 1980’s by the US Air Force, relations between both countries is warming, and is becoming more friendly in recent years.
“Known as the Lockerbie bombing and the Lockerbie air disaster in the UK, it became the subject of Scotland’s largest criminal inquiry, led by its smallest police force. It was widely regarded as an assault on a symbol of the United States, and with 189 of the victims American, it stood as the deadliest attack on American civilians until September 11, 2001.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Am_flight_103
A little history on the country of Libya is in order at this point:
“After the Second World War Libya was granted independence, as a condition of the Allied peace treaty with Italy. Since 1969 Libya has been ruled by Colonel Moammar al-Qadhafi, who came to power in a coup and deposed the Libyan monarchy of King Idris.”…
“U.S.-Libyan relations deteriorated when in December 2, 1979, Libyan mobs sacked the United States embassy in Tripoli.”…
“On May 6, 1981, four and a half months after Ronald Reagan became president of the United States, the United States government blamed the Libyan government for sponsoring international terrorism. All Libyan diplomats were expelled from the United States and the United States officially broke diplomatic relations between the two nations. The Libyan embassy was also shut down. The Reagan administration saw Libya as an unacceptable player on the international stage …”
“In March 1982 the U.S. declared a ban on the import of Libyan petroleum and the export to Libya of U.S. industrial technology items, most of which were used for oil; Europe did not follow suit.
“Relations between the UK and Libya became strained following the 1984 Libyan Embassy Siege.
“The U.S. attacked Libyan patrol boats from January to March 1986 during clashes over access to the Gulf of Sidra, which Libya claimed as territorial waters but was not recognized internationally…Later, on April 14, 1986, Reagan ordered major bombing raids against so-called “terrorist sites” [in] Tripoli and Benghazi that killed approximately 60 people… Among the victims of the April 14 bombing raid was the adopted daughter of Qadhafi.”
“The United Nations imposed sanctions against Libya in 1992 following the Pan Am Flight 103 Lockerbie disaster. The sanctions were lifted on September 12, 2003, after Libya agreed to accept responsibility and make payment of US $2.7 billion to the families of those who died in the bombing. In the same vein, on February 26, 2004, the United States lifted its 23-year travel ban to Libya, and on September 21, 2004, eliminated remaining economic sanctions against the former pariah, lifting the prohibitions of the Libyan Sanctions Regulations, 31 C.F.R. Part 550, and unblocking property and property interests previously blocked under those regulations.”— http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lybia
At the moment, and from recent history, the tables have again turned, and Libya is now bed buddy with the USA and UK.
“The land of Egypt shall not escape.” Dan. 11:42. From this prophecy the destiny of Egypt is fixed. Though a Muslim/Arab country, Egypt must be an America ally, and must conform to US political governance, for the prophet declares she “shall not escape” from the clutches of the king of the north.
The chain of events buoying Bush’s claim to “the advance of freedom” in the region includes largely peaceful elections in Iraq, which Bush has taken as vindication of the U.S.-led invasion and occupation that have claimed more than 1,500 American lives. The events also include Palestinian elections in early January, the promise of multi-candidate elections in Egypt next fall and Lebanese protests demanding that Syria withdraw its troops. “The chances of democratic progress in the broader Middle East have seemed frozen in place for decades,” Bush said. “Yet at last, clearly and suddenly, the thaw has begun.”– Chicago Tribune, Tuesday March 8, 2005.
“CAIRO, Egypt – Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Saturday ordered a revision of the country’s election laws and said multiple candidates could run in the nation’s presidential elections, a scenario Mubarak hasn’t faced since becoming the country’s leader in 1981.
“In his surprise announcement, Mubarak said the country needed ‘more freedom and democracy,’ responding to critics’ calls for political reform in Egypt. The possibility of a democratic election comes shortly after the historic elections in Iraq and the Palestinian territories that brought a taste of democracy to a region the United States has urged to reform. ‘The election of a president will be through direct, secret balloting, giving the chance for political parties to run for the presidential elections and providing guarantees that allow more than one candidate for the people to choose among them with their own will.’” Associated Press, February 26, 2005
From the news wires we see Egypt now making democratic reforms, and seeking a multi-party government, much like that of the other democracies of the world, and this she is doing in conformance with the “urges” of the United States! As stated before, “Egypt shall not escape” the clutches of the king of the north. The reader should note that Democracy to a Muslim/Arab country is like speaking demonism to a Christian. Freedom of choice and of one’s destiny is a very unsettling thought in the heart of the Muslim believers, and for Egypt to take this bold step, indicates that she is following in the steps of her historic present, and prophetic future.
In order to fix the truth in our minds before passing from prophecy fulfilled to prophecy unfulfilled, it is expedient to attend to the following Review:
After the dividing of Alexander’s dominion, Egypt and Palestine were, as previously seen, ruled first, by the Ptolemies; second, by Pagan Rome (Dan. 11:15, 16); third, by the Mohammedans (Dan. 11:22); and fourth, again by the Christians — specifically by Great Britain (Dan. 11:41).
These are the only historically and prophetically recorded supersessions involving the ancient lands of Egypt and Palestine. The surrendering of these countries, by one prophetic king to the other, unmistakably identifies “the king of the north” and “the king of the south” from the time of the dividing of Alexander’s empire to the present time, and leaves no room for doubt or for argument .
Rome’s (the king of the north’s) entering a second time into “the glorious land” (Dan. 11:41), shows that though, as aforementioned it once took the land from the Ptolemies (Dan. 11:16) it later, in 633 A.D., lost it to the Turks, and in 1919 — “in the time of the end” wholly regained it.
Here is simple proof that in modern times the Mohammedan rulers are in prophecy called the “king of the south,” while England’s kings, along with the disrupted family of Christianized kings whom prophecy says will not cleave one to another (Dan. 2:43), are called “king of the north.”
In her Pagan period, Rome is symbolized by the great image’s two legs of iron, and in her Christianized period, by its feet and toes of iron mixed with clay.
That the “king of the north” (Dan. 11:7) and the little-horn-power (having the eyes of man and a mouth speaking great things — Dan. 7:25) are one and the same power, is again shown by the fact that “time, times, and an half,” is the time given in both instances. See Daniel 12:7. (The twelfth chapter is a continuation of the eleventh.)
It is now clearly seen that the passing of Egypt and Palestine from the hands of one people to another, is the key which has unlocked the mystery of Daniel 11.
“And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over…But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.” Dan. 11: 40-43.
The king of the north is here seen to gain a signal military victory against the aggressor “king of the south” which brings him to his end. Therefore, the power which loses Palestine in the time of the end is the king of the south, and the power which gains it, as a result, bears the prophetic title “king of the north.” Since it is now common knowledge that the Ottoman Empire lost Jerusalem and Egypt to Great Britain, the answer is clear—the king of the north has transferred titles once again, this time to Great Britain, who will ultimately, and now has finally bequeathed international sovereignty to the United States of America—the world’s last super power nation before the consummation of all things! This power is further illustrated in the prophecies of Revelation 13:11-18.
“The outbreak of World War I found Turkey lined up with the Central Powers. Although Turkish troops succeeded against the Allies in the Gallipoli campaign (1915), Arabia rose against Turkish rule, and British forces occupied (1917) Baghdad and Jerusalem. In 1918, Turkish resistance collapsed in Asia and Europe. An armistice was concluded in October, and the Ottoman Empire came to an end. The Treaty of Sèvres (see Sèvres, Treaty of) confirmed its dissolution. With the victory of the Turkish nationalists, who had refused to accept the peace terms and overthrew the sultan in 1922, modern Turkey’s history began. http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0860176.html
The final end of the Ottoman Empire.” http://historyofengland.china2uk.com/ottoman/ottoman9.html
Friends, the world stage is warming up, from China and North Korea in the Far east, to the political epic-center in the Middle East, from Tidal Waves (Tsunamis) to hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes, the divine hand is writing the inscription on the wall of our world, “the end of all things are at hand, the Kingdom is about to be ushered in. Prepare ye to meet thy God—in peace or in wrath.” Please note that in the prophecy of Daniel 11:42, the bible flatly states, “He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.” Dan. 11: 42-43. We are now seeing how “Egypt” is quickly falling in the clutches of the King of the North, we have yet to see a full conformance of Libya and Ethiopia—prophecy declares they will. The term “at his steps” means one thing: these countries will follow closely behind him (his example)—be for him—become his ally. We can already see in Libya the sweeping compromises made in dismantling their nuclear ambitions, that they are playing right in the hands of the king of the north, and consequently in the hands of bible prophecy, as well. It will not take much for Ethiopia to come in full conformance with the democratic reforms now sweeping the Middle East. These prospects of peace in the Middle East, buoys up our presidents optimism to realize the possibility of these changes before his presidential tenure ends. The headlines declare that “Bush sees wave of democracy in Mideast” and observes that “The president, in a major address at the National Defense University in Washington, echoed the lyrical optimism about ending world tyranny that he voiced in his inaugural address in January. But this time Bush seized on several recent and expected events to support his assessment that ‘history is moving quickly’ in the Middle East.” Chicago Tribune, Tue, Mar. 08, 2005.
16. Tidings out of the east and out of the north trouble him. Therefore, he goes forth with great fury, destroys, and utterly makes away many (Dan. 11:44).
“But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.” Dan. 11:44
Every student of modern history should know that America was drawn into World War II because of the military operations of Germany to the north of Jerusalem, and the very deadly conquests of Japan, in the Far East. Thus it was an Asian-European war. “World War II or the Second World War was a global conflict that began on 7 July 1937 in Asia, and on 1 September 1939 in Europe. It lasted until 1945, and involved the majority of the world’s countries and every inhabited continent…It was the most extensive, expensive and bloodiest armed conflict in the history of the World.”
“Attributed in varying degrees to the Treaty of Versailles, the Great Depression, nationalism, and militarism, the causes of the war are a matter of debate. On which date the war began is also debated, cited as either the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, the Japanese invasion of China on 7 July 1937 (the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War), or earlier yet the 1931 Japanese invasion of Manchuria. Still others argue that the two world wars are one conflict separated only by a “ceasefire”…In Europe, the war ended with the surrender of Germany on 8 May 1945 (V-E and Victory Days), but continued in Asia until Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945 (V-J Day). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_Two
“Perhaps the greatest underlying factor causing the war, nationalism was the primary reason for German, Italian and Japanese aggression. Fascism in these countries was built largely upon nationalism and the search for a cohesive “nation state.” Hitler and his Nazi party used nationalism to great effect in Germany, already a nation where fervent nationalism was prevalent. In Italy, the idea of restoring the Roman Empire was attractive to many Italians. In Japan, nationalism, in the sense of duty and honor, especially to the emperor, had been widespread for centuries.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of_World_War_II
From the historians’ pen we are seeing the ture nature of the origins of WW-II, Italy and Germany in the North, followed by Japan in the East created destabilizing military maneuvers which disturbed the balance of power in these regions. The news (tidings) of these events, caused the the United States to girt herself for war, and enter into this conflict, one which would later define her end-time prophetic role as the title-holder “king of the north,” which batton was passed to her from Great Britain, while giving her the prowess to lead the rest of the world in conformance with her international ambitions, by will or by force. Having gained the victory in World War II, The United States and Great Britain, her closest ally, have become the prime movers in defining and shaping world politics. President Bush in his post September 11th speech declared to the world that, “America has no truer friend than Great Britain.” The Washington Post, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/nation/specials/attacked/transcripts/bushaddress_092001.html
Thus far, this prophecy has brought down through the ages from the division of the Grecian Empire to our present world, the world of Post World War II, the very present day in which were are now living. Inspiration has opened or eyes to the future by clearing our knowledge of the past, and it should behoove us to seek the Lord now while He may be found, and to call upon Him while He is near, that we may learn how to forsake our sinful ways, and return to our Lord in humble submission to His righteousness. The days are not far ahead when He whose fan is in His hand, will come and thoroughly purge His floor, and what a tragedy it would be for us, who have had this precious light of truth at our disposal to miss out on so great a salvation! Friend, is your all on the altar of sacrifice laid? is your all under the Spirit’s control? You will only be blessed, and find peace and sweet rest, as you yield Him your body and soul.
17. The Final Act In The Dramatic Reign Of The King Of The North
He also plants the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain, yet comes to his end, and no one helps him. (Dan. 11:45)
“And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” Dan. 11: 45.
The “he” in this verse is speaking of “the king of the north” who is to “plant,” or establish an extension of his Headquarters—his tabernacles—in “in the glorious holy mountain” of Jerusalem—in Palestine. Let’s accept the Word for what it says, in the time of the end, and prior to Michael’s standing up (Dan 12:1) the power identified as the king of the north—the United States and Great Britain are to have strong political and military involvement in the Middle East. As I am penning these very lines, there is a strong political and military push by both President George Bush (US), and Prime Minister Tony Blair (UK), to complete their “roadmap for peace in the middle” at the center of which policy stands the fate of “Jerusalem”—the glorious holy mountain. “’The chances of democratic progress in the broader Middle East have seemed frozen in place for decades,’ Bush said. ‘Yet at last, clearly and suddenly, the thaw has begun.’” Chicago Tribune, Tue, Mar. 08, 2005, http://www.chicagotribune.com
President Bush’s second-term presidency has with it not only domestic aims, but far-reaching international changes as well. A centerpiece of his final presidential tenure is to chart a “roadmap of peace” in the Middle East, wherein he proposes to have two states of Palestine (Israel and Palestine) living in peace and harmony. America’s closest ally and partner in the war against international terrorism is Great Britain, and President Bush has said of England, “America has no truer friend than Great Britain.” The Washington Post, Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001. Both these leaders seem to have a purpose-driven determination to bring peace to the Middle East through their international policies. In his press address Mr. Blair said: “Two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in an enduring peace, would do more to defeat this terrorism than bullets alone can ever do.” AFP: 9/28/2004, http://www.turkishpress.com/news.asp?id=28851.
“’The need to revitalise the Middle East peace process is the single most pressing political challenge in our world today,’ Mr Blair told reporters. The prime minister will travel to Washington shortly to discuss both the Middle East and January’s scheduled elections in Iraq.” http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections2004/story/0%2C13918%2C1342908%2C00.html, The Guardian, 2004.
“Secretary Powell leaves on this mission tonight. He carries with him my personal commitment: America will work without tiring to achieve two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in security and prosperity and in peace.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/05/20030509-11.html, President Bush’s Speech at University of South Carolina, Class of 2003, May 9, 2003.
“Leaders who want to be included in the peace process must show by their deeds an undivided support for peace. And as we move toward a peaceful solution, Arab states will be expected to build closer ties of diplomacy and commerce with Israel, leading to full normalization of relations between Israel and the entire Arab world. Israel also has a large stake in the success of a democratic Palestine. Permanent occupation threatens Israel’s identity and democracy. A stable, peaceful Palestinian state is necessary to achieve the security that Israel longs for. So I challenge Israel to take concrete steps to support the emergence of a viable, credible Palestinian state.” http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/06/20020624-3.html, US President George Bush through The Office of the Press Secretary, June 24, 2002.
To give autonomy to the Palestinians by granting them their own nation-state separate and distinct form the nation-state of Israel, both the US and the UK will continue to pour heavy political and military influence to forge this long-looked for peace in the troubled Middle East. But, the Bible warns, “when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” 1 Thess. 5: 3. America and the rest of the world would smile at political stability in Israel, and they are giving their all to forge this peace, the end result of which will be their actual demise. The great nations of history have been defeated by weaker ones, when they were most militarily armored, and most independent of God—the very source of their strength. God allows this anomaly in order to save both peoples: The weaker nation will see that it was God who was on their side and gave them the victory, and the stronger nation will realize that their apostasy from the Lord led to their defeat, and in the end, only the Lord’s name alone will be glorified. What a mighty God we serve!
The mustering of a combined Arab-Muslim military coalition centered upon uprooting Israel, is scheduled to unfold in latter days—the time of the end. This work has begun with the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization), and is being secretly discussed at higher levels within the Arab League of Nations. Thus saith the Lord of God of Israel: “After many days thou [Gog] shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.” Ezek. 38: 8. From what the Bible is here saying, we are to see Israel dwelling safely, “all of them” in “the latter years” and this will inspire the wrath of Gog—the Arab-Muslim military coalition. Now, let me hasten to say that the Israel here mentioned, is not political Israel, but Evangelical Israel, the 144,000 Israelites (Rev. 7:4) and their converts.
There will be no lasting peace in the Middle East, but only as ordered by the Prince of Peace, when He shall have established His Kingdom. The mustering of peace which dances across the TV screens, showing free and open elections in Palestine, Egypt and Iraq, with hopes of more countries to share in this quasi democracy, rather than being the harbingers of hope for the Middle East in general, and Jerusalem in particular, are the actual warning signs of a ticking time-bomb, ready to be detonated when the prophetic clock strikes zero! At that time, the US and her closest ally—Great Britain, will then realize only too late that their coalition has been breached and broken, and they will suffer a military defeat many times more humiliating than that of Pearl Harbor. The bible flatly states that “he [the king of the north] shall come to his end [be defeated], and none [of his allies] shall help him,” implying that the allies of the US will walk away from their allegiance while engaged in the midst of a gigantic war, when the war has intensified to its hottest peak! This defeat of the king of the north will be a signal to both the church and the world, that the Judgment for the Living in the house of God is about to begin, it will be a tell tale signal that “Michael will stand up” (Dan. 12:1), and deliver his people. (For a detailed study of Daniel 12, read my article: “The Last Forty-Two Months of Revelation Eleven.”)
From the news wires we read: “Jane’s Defense Weekly reported this week that the US has put out a call for bids to construct a new military base for Israel in the central part of the country. One might well ask, why isn’t Israel building its own military base? I suspect that we are witnessing the preliminary implementation of a coming peace deal between the PLO and Israel. Continuing the tradition of expecting Israel to trade “land for peace,” the current peace proposal requires Israel not only to cede the majority of the West Bank occupied territories, including much of the critical water supply so essential to Israeli agriculture, but also to abandon several strategic military bases and some settlements as well. The US has offered in the past to step in and build new bases to replace those that must be given up. This current move to begin building one such base may well be related to US knowledge that an eventual deal is inevitable and the content predetermined.” http://www.888webtoday.com/skousen3.html US to Build New Military Base for Israel, Joel Skousen
“The US President George W. Bush announced yesterday that he has postponed for 6 months the transfer of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem. In a memorandum addressed to the US secretary of state Colin Powell Bush said that this decision ” is necessary for protecting the national security interests of the USA. He said: “my administration is still committed to start the operation of transferring our embassy to Jerusalem.” Bush vowed to transfer the embassy to occupied Jerusalem during his elections campaign in 2000.” http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/Daily/Day/040616/2004061613.html, 6/16/2004.
“The US Army’s Engineering Corps will soon start building new training bases for the Golani Brigade and paratroopers. The construction will be funded by the Americans, as part of the special security aid to Israel in the framework of the Wye accord…In view of the budgetary crunch faced by the IDF [Israeli Defense Force], it was decided that construction of the two training bases and the new camp will be undertaken with the special US aid for the implementation of the Wye accord. In discussions held between the Israeli Defense Ministry and the US Department of Defense, it was agreed that the construction will be carried out by the US Army’s Engineering Corps, assisted by American and Israeli contractors.” http://www.geocities.com/athens/academy/3132/1999/0824.htm 8/18/99
We are indeed living at the very commencement of the fulfillment of Dan. 11:45, the times when “thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.” Friend, the question is clear: Is your name written there, on the page white and fair, in the book of God’s Kingdom, is your name written there? The King will come, and purify his church, and only those who have withstood temptation in the strength of the Mighty One, and purified their souls form sin, will be permitted to act a part in proclaiming the last message of hope and mercy to a dying world—the third angel’s message in verity. Now is not the time to be “getting” ready, but to “be ready and waiting” for the bridegroom’s coming. The knowledge of these prophecies will do us no earthly or heavenly good, should we become callous to our high calling in Christ Jesus our Lord. So, let us fight the good fight of faith, putting on the whole armor of God, doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with our God. Now may the peace of God which passes all understandings abide with you now and always, Amen.
